Arts in Healthcare
The VSA Kentucky Arts in Healthcare Programs involve bringing in artists, with extensive experience in working healthcare cultures, to work individually and in small groups with patients.
These programs offer patients the opportunity to express their feelings and to teach skills which aid in their overall coping during hospitalization and illness. Hospitalization represents a critical interruption in people’s lives, especially children, who must endure repeated stays in the hospital. For some children who live with cancer, cystic fibrosis and other chronic condition, being in the hospital repeatedly limits the experiences they might have as “normal” children, such as art and music classes in school and community programs. Being in the hospital also gives these children different experiences which influence their perspectives in life. These young patients are rich with insights, but often lack the creative environment in which to express them. Having the VSA Kentucky artists residencies in hospitals creates an expressive environment to help children experience and create instrumental music, visual arts, clowning and creative dramatics. The patients are encouraged to participate on whatever level they can. The artists sessions also provide an “escape” from the hospital routine, a sense of control and empowerment, and an opportunity for “normal” socialization and activity. Parents are with the patients and get involved with the activities for quality family time!
VSA Kentucky offers these unique artist residencies at facilities such as the Kentucky Children’s Hospital (Lexington) and Kosair Children’s Hospital (Louisville).
